In some instances, after a person has been charged with a crime, the judge will not set a bail amount and will instead allow the person to be released without paying bail. This means that the person is released on his or her own recognizance. This option is not available to many defendants and is usually reserved to those crimes which are minor and non-violent; when the defendant has no past criminal record.
